The following details are given in the London Gazette of 23rd August, 1940 : For most conspicuous gallantry on 21st May, 1940, when his company was holding a position on the line of the River Escaut, south of Tournai. The enemy succeeded in breaking through beyond the company's right flank, which was consequently threatened. C.S.M. Gristock organised a party of eight and went forward to cover the right flank. An enemy machine gun was inflicting heavy casualties on his company, and he went on to try to put it out of action. Advancing under heavy fire, he was severely wounded in both legs. He nevertheless gained his fire position, and by well aimed rapid fire killed the crew and put the machine gun out of action. He dragged himself back, but refused to be evacuated until the line had been made good. By his gallant action the position of the company was secured and many casualties prevented. C.S.M. Gristock has since died of his wounds.

The following details are given in the London Gazette of December 8th, 1944:- On the 4th May, 1944, at Kohima in Assam, a battalion of the Norfolk Regiment attacked the Japanese. Captain Randle took over command of the company which was leading the attack. His handling of a difficult situation was masterly, and although wounded himself he continued to inspire his men until the company captured its objective. He then brought in all the wounded men who were lying outside the perimeter. Captain Randle refused to be evacuated, and despite his wound carried out a personal reconnaissance with great daring, prior to a further attack on the new enemy positions. At dawn on 6th May Captain Randle led this attack, and ran into heavy fire from a bunker. Appreciating that the destruction of this enemy post was imperative, if the operation was to succeed, Captain Randle charged the Japanese post single-handed. Although now mortally wounded, he silenced the gun with a grenade thrown through the bunker slit. He then flung his body across the slit so that the aperture should be completely sealed. The bravery shown by this officer could not have been surpassed, and by his self-sacrifice he saved the lives of many of his men and enabled not only his own company but the whole battalion to gain its objective and win a decisive victory over the enemy.

Notes.

My father, Charles Henry Robert Lovegrove, service no. 5767704 enlisted in the Nofolks on 16th July 1923. He served with the 2nd Battalion and was a drummer/bugler in the Battalion Band. He was an infantry man and was in the retreat to Dunkirk and was one of the fortunate members of the Battalion to get to the beach. However, several were killed and he was badly injured there but was fortunate to be brought back to U.K.

My grandfather Corporal Percy "Pat" Preston from the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment, was captured at Dunkirk and taken to the POW camp Stalag 8B. The photograph was taken around 1940 when he was first captured (at Dunkirk) and taken to Stalag 8B in Lamsdorf. Percy survived the camps and was repatriated back to the United Kingdom in 1943.

He passed away in 1966 in Kelling Army Hospital in Norfolk. He lived all his life in Bungay, Suffolk, married in 1945 and had four children.

Citation

The citation in the London Gazette of 2nd November, 1944, gives the following details :- In North-West Europe on 6th August, 1944, the position held by a battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment near Sourdeval was heavily attacked. Corporal Bates was commanding a forward section of the left forward company which suffered some casualties, so he decided to move the remnants of his section to an alternative position from which he could better counter the enemy thrust. As the threat to this position became desperate, Corporal Bates seized a light machine-gun and charged, firing from the hip. He was almost immediately wounded and fell, but he got up and advanced again, though mortar bombs were falling all round him. He was hit a second time and more seriously wounded, but he went forward undaunted, firing constantly till the enemy started to fall back before him. Hit for the third time, he fell, but continued firing until his strength failed him. By then the enemy had withdrawn and Corporal Bates, by his supreme gallantry and self-sacrifice, had personally saved a critical situation. He died shortly afterwards of the wounds he had received.

" Lieut. Cox: Royal Norfolk Regiment.

On 21st September 44, when a Jap ship containing prisoners of war was sinking he, with complete disregard for his own safety, and under MG fire from American aircraft, helped men out of the hold while the boat was sinking, and by so doing lost his own life ( consult CSM Kerr - 2 Cambridgeshire for corroboration, as Lieut. Cox helped him out of the hold."
