Based in Norfolk at the time of the Battle

 

44th Bombardment Group

 

Based at RAF Shipdham, Norfolk the group assisted in the Battle of the Bulge by attacking bridges, tunnels, rail and communications in the area at that time.

“Flew a resupply mission during the airborne assault across the Rhine”

 

93rd Bombardment Group

 

Based at Hardwick, Norfolk the group “Struck enemy transportation and other targets during the Battle of the Bulge”.

 

96th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Snetterton, Norfolk, which is now the well-known race circuit, has the Ardennes-Alsace listed in their campaign history but no specific details known.

 

100th Bombardment Group Heavy

 

The group known as the “Bloody Hundredth” due to heavy losses in eight missions over Germany, “attacked marshalling yards, defended villages, and communications in the Ardennes sector during the Battle of the Bulge, and covered airborne assault across the Rhine”.  The group was based at Thorpe Abbotts in Norfolk.

 

359th Fighter Group

 

The group based at East Wretham also participated in the Battle of the Bulge and flew missions in support of the assault across the Rhine.

 

389th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Hethel the group “hit storage depots and communication centers during the Battle of the Bulge, and dropping food ammunition, gasoline and other supplies to troops participating in the airborne assault across the Rhine”

 

390th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Framlingham the group “cut German supply lines during the Battle of the Bulge.  Hit airfields in support of the airborne assault across the Rhine.”

 

392nd Bombardment Group

 

Based at Wendling a base built by Taylor-Woodrow which is interesting for me as my grandfather worked for the company so may have been at the base in its humble beginnings (1942).   The group “Bombed railroads, bridges, and highways to cut off German supply lines during Battle of the Bulge”.  Also dropped supplies in relation to the assault across the Rhine.

 

445th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Tibenham the group “bombed German communications during the Battle of the Bulge.

Also dropped food, medical supplies and ammunition in support of the airborne assault on the Rhine which landed near Wesel and flew a bombing mission in the same area hitting a landing ground at Stormede.”

 

448th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Seething the group “Bombed transportation and communications centers in the combat zone during the Battle of the Bulge.   Dropped supplies to troops at Wesel during the airborne assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945.”

 

452nd Bombardment Group

 

Based at Deopham Green the group “Hit enemy communications in and near the combat zone during the Battle of the Bulge.  Bombed an airfield in support of the airborne assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945.”

 

453rd Bombardment Group

 

Based at Old Buckingham the group “bombed German communications during the Battle of the Bulge”.  Also dropped valuable supplies near Wesel to assist in the assault for the Rhine.

 

458th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Horsham St Faith the group “Struck transportation lines during the Battle of the Bulge.  Attacked enemy airfields to assist the Allied assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945”

 

466th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Attlebridge, Norfolk, the group carried out missions “hitting German communications and transportation during the Battle of the Bulge.  Bombed the airfield at Nordhorn in support of the airborne assault across the Rhine on 24 Mar 1945.”

 

467th Bombardment Group

 

Based in Rackheath, Norfolk the group carried out missions that “Attacked German communications and fortifications during the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944-Jan 1915. Hit enemy transportation to assist the Allied assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945.”

 

491st Bombardment Group

 

Also based in Metfield, Suffolk before returning to North Pickenham in Norfolk, the group “bombed German supply lines and fortifications during the Battle of the Bulge, and supported Allied forces in the airborne drop across the Rhine in Mar 1945”
