34th Bombardment Group

 

Based at RAF Mendlesham, Suffolk between 26th April – 25th July supported ground forces in the Battle of the Bulge in support of the Eighth AF.

 

95th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Framlingham before moving onto Horham, Suffolk the group “attacked enemy transportation during the Battle of the Bulge and bombed airdromes in support of the Allied assault across the Rhine”

 

364th Fighter Group

 

Based at Honington, Suffolk took part in the Battle of the Bulge and the assault across the Rhine.

 

385th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Great Ashfield near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk “attacked German communications and fortifications during the Battle of the Bulge.”

 

388th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Knettishall, Suffolk “Aided the final drive through Germany during the early months of 1945 by striking targets such as marshalling yards, rail bridges, and road junctions.”

 

353rd Fighter Group

 

Based at Raydon, Suffolk the group carried out its fighter-bomber, escort, and counter-air activities, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the airborne attack across the Rhine.

 

356th Fighter Group

 

Based at Martlesham, Suffolk “Bombed and strafed in the Arnhem area on the 17,18 and 23 Sep 1944 to neutralize enemy gun emplacements.”

 

357th Fighter Group

 

Based at Leiston participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the assault over the Rhine.

 

446th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Flixton near Bungay, Suffolk “Bombed marshalling yards, bridges, and

road junctions during the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1g44-Jan 1945. Dropped supplies to airborne and ground troops near Wesel during the Allied assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945.”

 

447th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Rattlesden, Suffolk “During the Battle of the Bulge, the group assaulted

marshalling yards, railroad bridges, and communications centers in the combat zone.

Also supported the airborne assault across the Rhine”.

 

479th Fighter Group

 

Based at Wattisham Suffolk “Participated in the Battle of the Bulge by escorting

bombers to and from targets in the battle area and by strafing transportation targets

while on escort duty.  Flew escort missions from Feb to Apr 1945, but also provided area patrols to support the airborne attack across the Rhine.”

 

486th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Sudbury, Suffolk bombed “enemy installations in support of ground troops during the Battle of the Bulge and the assault across the Rhine (Mar-Apr 1945).”

 

487th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Lavenham, Suffolk the group “Aided ground forces during the Battle of the Bulge, and turned again to support and interdictory operations in Mar 1945 as the Allies crossed the Rhine and made the final thrust into Germany.”  

 

490th Bombardment Group

 

Based at Eye, Suffolk, the group “Interrupted strategic missions to attack supply lines and military installations during the Battle of the Bulge attacked interdictory targets and supported advancing ground forces.”

 

493d Bombardment Group

 

Based at Debach, Suffolk the group attacked enemy communications during the Battle of the Bulge, and assisted in the airborne assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945.
